Governor Proposes Major Cuts To Public Transit
After Gov. Schwarzenegger unveiled a January budget proposal that would cut $1.1 billion meant for public transit, CALPIRG Advocate Emily Rusch quickly met with dozens of legislators to ask them to oppose the cuts. We’ve already identified numerous legislators willing to fight for public transit funding in the final budget adopted in June.
“With California’s population expected to increase by 13 million people by 2030, it’s clear that we need more public transit, not less, to meet our growing travel needs,” said CALPIRG’s Emily Rusch.
Thirty organizations signed onto a letter to the Legislature opposing the cuts and on March 20, dozens of organizations and individuals participated in a CALPIRG-sponsored lobby day in Sacramento to communicate the importance of convenient, efficient public transit to keep California moving.
So far CALPIRG members and activists have also sent more than 5,000 letters to the governor, legislators, and local officials, articulating the benefits of public transit to relieve traffic congestion, reduce our oil dependence, and live up to California’s leadership promises on global warming. |
